MPO connector - interface

With the rapid development of information technology, the demand for high-speed data transmission is growing. Among various transmission media, optical fiber has become an indispensable part of modern communication networks due to its advantages such as high speed, high bandwidth, and anti-interference properties. MPO (Multi-fiber Push On) interface, as an important connection method in optical fiber communication, is gradually gaining widespread attention in the industry.

I. Overview of MPO Interface
MPO (Multi-fiber Push On/Pull Off) connector is a standardized interface designed for high-density fiber optic connections. MPO connectors can connect multiple fibers at once, typically arranging 12 fibers in a row, and can also support one or multiple rows of fibers within the same MPO connector. Depending on the number of fibers arranged within the connector, it can be divided into single-row (12 fibers) and multi-row (24 fibers or more). Its standard is specified by IEC 61754-7.

The types of MPO connectors can be distinguished based on several factors, including the number of cores (fiber array count), male and female connectors, polarity (Key), polishing type (PC or APC), etc. When connecting, certain principles must be followed: connectors with the same number of cores must be connected (such as 12-core to 12-core, 24-core to 24-core, etc.); a male connector and a female connector form a pair for connection; connectors with the same polishing type must be connected (such as PC to PC, APC to APC).

The polarity of MPO connectors is managed through Keys, which are defined as Key Up and Key Down. A pair of MPO connectors are matched through MPO adapters, which come in two types: Type A (Key Up/Key Down) and Type B (Key Up/Key Up). MPO connectors (single mode) with APC connection surfaces feature an 8° bevel and can only be mated through Type A adapters.

II. MPO Interface Type

There are primarily two types of MPO interfaces: Mini-MPO and standard MPO. Furthermore, MPO interfaces can be further categorized into three main forms: adapters, backplane-type receptacles, and printed circuit board-type receptacles. Mini-MPO connectors are suitable for 1, 2, and 4-fiber connections and are commonly used in 40G, 100G, and 200G optical modules. On the other hand, standard MPO connectors are designed for 2-12 fiber and 16-24 fiber connections and are predominantly employed in high-speed optical modules, such as 400G and 800G optical modules. This classification enables MPO interfaces to cater to optical communication systems of varying scales and requirements.

III. Comparison of Mini-MPO and Standard MPO Interface Dimensions and Specifications

The dimensions of MPO connectors vary depending on the number of cores. The Mini-MPO measures 4.4mm x 2.45mm and is suitable for smaller-scale fiber optic connections, while the standard MPO measures 6.4mm x 2.45mm and is designed for larger-scale fiber optic connection needs.

IV. Application Scenarios

The MPO interface features low insertion loss, high return loss, and good durability, and supports 40G and 100G network applications. Its fiber optic patch cords are divided into adapter and non-adapter types. There are various types of MPO adapter patch cords, which can be adapted to branch 2-24 cores of 0.9 or 2.0 optical cables. The connector types include FC, LC, SC, ST, etc.

Its application scenarios are extensive, encompassing LAN cabling between different buildings within enterprises, optical link interconnection in optical active devices, cabling within communication base stations, cabling within distribution boxes, optical signal connections in equipment rooms of residential areas/industrial parks/commercial buildings, as well as dense building cabling systems, fiber-optic communication systems, cable television networks, telecommunications networks, local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), FTTx, and more.
